One day in Lower Manhattan

[scroll down to see English, bottom to see photos]

Union Square,
Madison Square,
Greenley Square,

Broadway,
想看到電影中浪漫的露天茶座食肆,三層高的住宅樓房,是有氣質的歷史建築物;

Walk about 6.2 miles (10km) in 6 hours.
Burn about 600 calories.
Spend about USD 34 (3.5 + 8.5 + 5 + 5 + 11) on food.

Had one Banana pudding @ Magnolia Bakery;
one single Hamburger with Bacon, one regular organic Ice Tea, @ Shake Shack;
one espresso shakerato with orange syrup, @ Eataly;
three fried Sicilian Rice Balls (Ragu, Roasted Corn and Jalapino, Nutella), @ Arancini;
one Brisket of Beef sandwich, @ Central Market NY.

I had breakfast before leaving home, as usual as other hiking day. I chose some high carbs noodle soup with fish slices. I wear breathable upper low-cut hiking shoes, cotton socks, and dress light with short sleeve tee, khaki pants,

My plan was to walk across Broadway from south to north, lower to mid Manhattan. Luckily, there was a parade to celebrate the 2015 FIFA Women World Cup Champion. Part of the Broadway in lower Manhattan was closed, especially the area near the City Hall. I need walk around it.

So, when I travel, I always bring the street map with me, the Google Map in my cell phone. Just ensure it has sufficient battery.

Unpredictable things commonly happens during a trip. Due to the new route, I saw few wonderful building from different view, that was totally a reward.

Just a friendly reminder, Broadway is one way road and vehicle travel from north to south. Hence, it is very easy to identify the direction. In addition, you can almost always see the tall Empire State Building sits in the far North among other high rise. Let it to be part of the compass.

Departure:
10am arrive Staten Island Terminal (also known as South Ferry Terminal)
12pm arrive Union Square,
1:30pm arrive Madison Square,
3pm arrive Greenley Square,
6pm arrive Grand Central Terminal.

Broadway can be divided into few sub section.
The south tip is FiDi (Financial District); from Canal St to Houston St is fashion stores; from Houston to 14th St (Union Square) is New York University (NYU) neighborhood, stores are more down-to-earth and diverse; from 23th St to 34th St is Commercial Business District and Restaurant, you will find more hotel mixed in this Garment District area; from 32th St and Herald Square near Macy, easy to find Flagship stores and crowds; from 34th St to 43th on Park Ave, there are high rise residential building.

Postscript:
The Broadway between Canal St and Houston St, there are few stores spaces for lease. This part of Broadway is in the SOHO district but not as lively as before.

The Broadway between Houston St and 14th St, shops in surrounding area are for NYU.
Want a touch of movie romance atmosphere, the patio nearby the street and three story historic preserve building.
It is suggested to walk on the W. Houston St up to the 6th Ave, then change to Bleecker St.
Finally, walk back from the W. 11th St toward Broadway.

Do not confused by the 6th Ave and 6th Street. The Sixth Avenue is from North to South, while the Sixth Street is from East to West.

The Broadway between 23th St to 34th St is Garment District.
If you are unfamiliar with this area and afraid of the store staff stands in front of their shops. Then, you are suggested to go 5th Ave (from south to north), or Madison Ave.
